Thousands of years ago, there was a warm Ural Sea here. Therefore, inside the Shikhan there are deposits of rock salt and limestone. In the accumulation of fossils, you can even find the remains of corals and sponges.
Shikhans consist of four single mountains: Tora-Tau, Shakh-Tau, Yurak-Tau and Kush-Tau, which form a narrow chain that extends 20 km along the Belaya River. They are located near the cities of Sterlitamak, Ishimbay and Salavat.
Unfortunately, the development of limestone deposits for the manufacture of building materials and materials for detergents gradually destroys one of the mountains - Shah-Tau. Undoubtedly, the Shikhans Mountains are valuable both for the city-forming enterprise and for history: such mountains remained only in Australia. We can only hope that the rest of the mountains will be untouched and remain to live.
As for the tourism: Long steep slopes, height up to 400 m and unique nature provide wide opportunities for active entertainments in Bashkiria in winter and summer.
Ski resorts on Shikhan are one of the most popular holiday destinations where people from Bashkiria and from all over the Urals go to. Sanatoriums and medical centers use the opportunities that provide Shikhans to offer a really high-quality rest.
