The National Museum of the Republic of Tatarstan in Kazan
The National Museum of the Republic of Tatarstan (NM RT) is the largest research, cultural and educational institution of national importance in Tatarstan. It was founded as the Kazan City Scientific Industrial Museum in 1894 and opened on April 5, 1895.

The museum is based on a private 40,000 collection of Andrei Fedorovich Likhachev (1832–90), an archeologist, historian, collector known in the region, as well as exhibits from the 1890 scientific and industrial exhibition.

The museum occupies the building of the former Kazan Gostiny Dvor, which is a monument of architecture and history of federal significance. Its architectural appearance began to take shape at the beginning of the 19th century, later the building was reconstructed several times; the modern look was formed after the restoration in 1990s.

In 1981–2005, The National Museum of the Republic of Tatarstan was central to the museum association, which included more than 80 museums of the republic.

The museum’s modern funds include over 805,400 items, of which 580,085 items of the main fund. They systematically cover all the local lore topics, representing value for studying the history of the peoples of the Volga region and the Ural region.
