Famous Palace Square in Saint Petersburg amazes with its scale. It covers an area of about 5 hectares.It is one of the world's most beautiful architectural ensembles.
The earliest and most celebrated building on the square, the baroque Winter Palace. On the opposite side is the bow-shaped Building of the General Staff, which centers on a double triumphal arch crowned with a Roman quadriga.
A number of important events in Russian history are connected with the square, including October Revolution in 1917 and the Bloody Sunday massacre.
The square is called the heart of St. Petersburg – there are numerous mass events and concerts. It is a favorite place in the city to celebrate Victory Day, New Year, festival of the White Nights.
