Gatchina is a town in Leningrad Oblast, only 48 km from Saint Petersburg. This place is popular with tourists thanks to the Imperial estate that is placed there. There is a home of several generations of Romanov royal family at this estate, and tourists can explore both the royal palace and the beautiful gardens around it.
The Grand Palace in the heart of Gatchina was completed in 1781. The project was created by one of the greatest Russian architects of that period – Antonio Rinaldi. It combines elements of Medieval and Classic architecture with interiors representing Neoclassical style. This palace and Gatchina itself are not so rich and grandiose as Peterhof, but they are still beautiful, full of historical details, and worth visiting if you love romantic places.
