Melikhovo Estate is the place where the famous writer and playwright Anton Chekhov used to live with his mother, father, and sister between the years of 1892-1899. It was there that some of the dramatist’s famous works (including the plays ‘Uncle Vanya’ and ‘Seagull’) were written.
The estate is now turned into a museum and is open for visitors. The place is neat and tidy and very well maintained. There are several houses to visit there, with a lot of authentic belongings on display.
You can join the most interesting guided tours and see live performances — they are fantastic, better than at some theaters! All the descriptions around the museum are duplicated in English.
Apart from being Chekhov’s former home, Melikhovo is a charming place in itself. You can walk around the picturesque territory with lovely ponds, age-old trees and beautiful flowers, breathing in the fresh air, or have a cup of tea on the summer terrace while enjoying a live performance.
The most relaxing and fulfilling experience! The estate is located 40 km from Moscow, near the town of Chekhov. It is beautiful all the year round, but if you come in May, when the lilacs are in bloom, you won’t want to leave it!
